I had to look up Bisto, but I'd guess there are hundreds of similar monosodium glutamate (E610) based instant gravies and sauces here that go under different brand names.

My husband may be working at Microsoft and I was wondering whether we should consider living in Redmond or Bellevue? I hear the schools are great in Bellevue but as we don't have kids right now, would Redmond be the better choice in terms of the commute to work, or would the commute from Bellevue be about the same too? Any advice would help. Also, Xsteen, if you're listening, what is the rental market like now? I'm not keen on living in an apartment and would like to look for a 3BR, 2 Bath house. How much rent are we looking at? We could probably afford up to $2800.

Mystic: It depends what you're looking for...the "east side" includes Redmond and surrounding areas, east of the lake(s). These areas are a bit removed from Seattle proper, though there's plenty of shopping and "cityscape" in nearby Bellevue. Redmond has a more sparse population and has a lot of trees, parks, etc. There are a lot of really nice, woodsy areas on the east side in general, though. If you live on the west side (west of the lakes...Seattle proper), you'll have to commute to Redmond, which takes anywhere from 20 minutes (no traffic) to 1.5 hours (rush hour, depending on where you live). Sammamish (not far from Redmond Town Center) has a huge lake, lots of parks, and some great rentals. The east side in general is very similar to Reading, England. Also, North and South Seattle have a lot of good real estate and rentals that are still relatively affordable. Expect to pay about 1000 dollars in more popular areas for a 1 br rental. That will increase in 500 dollar increments per additional bedroom (generally speaking). If you're planning on staying, Seattle is one of the best places to invest in the market right now in the entire U.S.! Moderator cut: link deleted Hope that helps!

I have been to the UK; trust me you will love it here over in Seattle. The weather is the same as over there, and actually there is allot of similarities such as Bus transportation system, Seattle is just building its light rail now. The roads are bigger.

There is no high street shopping as in UK but there is great malls, and I am sure you will love it, people over here are very kind and sweet. You may find things cheaper over hear as compared to UK, since your husband found a job in Redmond, you are very lucky as Redmond it self I a great neighborhood.

You may find a little of culture shock, but it is fun as you will learn of cause. Differences such as:

America - British
Pants - Trousers
Trunk of a car - Booth of a car
Elevator - Lift
Cookies - Biscuits

WARNING – LONG POST

I am from the UK and we moved here about 16 months ago with Microsoft, so far so good. I will tell you what we were told and what we have learnt:-

Good School Districts: Lake Washington, Northshore, Issaquah and Bellevue are good. If you look at The Seattle Times | Seattle Times Newspaper you will be able to find WASL results and information about all the schools.

Places to live: IMO it all looks the same, with everywhere having very good amenities. The closer you get to Microsoft or Seattle, the more expensive it gets. Redmond, Sammamish, Bellevue, Issaquah (though I don't get why Issaquah is so popular, there is nothing there and the traffic is awful) and Woodinville are all popular places to live. Bothell would be the furthest North that I would recommend and I have a family, so Seattle didn't really appeal.

With regards to housing, depending on who you listen to; the market here has gone soft. Now, I have heard three scenarios: 1. We are looking a single digit appreciation for the next few years. 2. We will have no appreciation for the next few years. 3. The housing market will decline 15 - 20% in the next 5 years. Who knows what will happen, I haven’t noticed the house prices going down, but I have noticed that houses are staying on the market a little longer than they were. As I said though, no one really knows what will happen. Redfin and Zillow are informative sites to visit for housing. Also, Local Live is a good site to use to calculate approximate commute times.

My husband's commute is between 20 and 35 minutes (we live about 15 miles from Microsoft), depending on what time he leaves. I would say the traffic is no worse than the M4 during peak times.

Cost of Living: It costs less to live here. Taxes are low (with deductions our tax rate is about 21%), petrol is cheap, utilities are cheap, food shopping is about the same, luxury goods and cars are cheap, clothes are cheaper and eating out is inexpensive.

The weather: I find the weather quite depressing, it's not just the fact that it rains ALOT here; it's more to do with the sky being so low and grey 9 months of the year.

Also, activities here are outside based and sports orientated (hiking, kayaking, biking, skiing, basketball, baseball, etc) There is not a lot to do here just for a fun day out (I am speaking with children in mind), except bowling, miniature golf and the cinema. In England, we are so well catered for with theme parks galore, soft play, swimming pools with slides and wave machines, a walk around Windsor or a trip to Warwick Castle. That is something that I miss being here.

Anyway, I have waffled on enough. I hope I have helped and let me know if you need any more specific information.
