Hoping to stay in Seattle proper, so no suburbs or nearby cities.

Depends on where in the city it is, and if it's an older building, or a newer, modern style unit. I've seen stuff as cheap as $500 in areas like Georgetown or International District/Pioneer Square, but they're either not in the greatest of shape, or they're efficiency studios (i.e, too small if you've got a decent amount of stuff). I've also seen really nice studios in areas like Belltown or Capitol Hill going for around $1,300+. The really cheap stuff can get snatched up pretty quickly, so I'd say a median range for a smaller/older studio is gonna be around $700-950.

This.

Another option would be to rent a room and have room mates. I knew a guy who rented out a room of an apartment downtown in James st. and he paid around $300 / mo. plus help with the bills and chores.

If you did it in college, and you're just starting out, it shouldn't be such a huge shock.
