Is an hour commute via train from Tacoma to downtown Seattle possible?

The Sounder Train boards a bit south of downtown Tacoma near the Tacoma Dome.

It is about an hour trip to King Street Station in Seattle.

That side tend to be a lot more reliable than the Everett-Seattle side. So it's pretty do-able. If the train schedule doesn't really work for you, there's lots of express buses going between Seattle-Tacoma and is only a couple mins longer than the train.

Actually, I think the ST express buses are faster from Tacoma, aren't they? The train takes a circuitous route going all the way to Puyallup and Sumner before coming up through Auburn and Kent where the bus takes a direct routing up I-5 and doesn't make any stops.

If you're into efficiency going from Tacoma to Seattle, I believe the ST bus service is the way to go.

Depends on the time, though... the buses also have to deal with traffic. I am assuming she's right in middle of the rush, given the limited train schedule. If there was no or little traffic to contend, by far the buses are a better option than the trains.
