Hello Seattlites! I'm graduating from college in 2 years and i'm looking to join your ranks. I am currently pursuing a business degree with a concentration in finance. I won't be able to move out there if I can't find a job so what do you think my chances are of landing a solid spot somewhere? I am currently attending Drexel University in Philadelphia which is a reputable college around the North East. We may not have the title of Ivy League here but my school does provide an edge in work experience. Internships are part of the education process here and by the time i graduate i'll have work experience in 3 separate financial positions/internships on top of my previous work experience before college. Think I'll be able to get in with a big name company in the Seattle are if i applied? or am I SOL without higher education? Thanks so much!

Other than Aeronautical Engineering and High Tech, this area is still full of well qualified and experienced people looking for jobs. Back about 2006 some of the bigger name financial
firms would hire new graduates to help with auditing and many have moved up some, but
with so many from smaller companies getting laid off since then, the competition has gotten fierce. We just hired for a new financial analyst position at about $24/hour and the person selected has an MBA and 6 years experience.

IMO your best bet is to finish that degree, and then you should have an ok chance here. Finance and accounting are closely related (I studied accounting), it can be a tad tough here as the local job market isn't as good as some would like you to believe, but it's miles ahead of many locales in the Midwest and such. If you can do it, look into the CFA or even CPA (extra accounting courses, but very good at putting you ahead of other grads). I don't know how set you are on Seattle, to be honest in my experience things are better in Texas for people in the finance/accounting fields. I am looking at moving back to Honolulu myself soon, assuming my GF passes the CPA (that's what's keeping me here, but she's ready to go there too).

A lot can change in two years, so I think you're jumping the gun a bit. Finish your degree first, or at least wait til you're into your senior year to re-examine Seattle.
