I've been looking at various recreational sites and on several I have seen people engaging in water sports at various lakes. I'm not talking about ocean water. I know that water is freaking cold! But how about the lakes? Is it realistic to plan on swimming in them when the weather is warm? I'm particularly interested in Sammamish, as we will be moving to Issaquah. Thanks for your input!

Yes Lake Sammamish is very swimmable in the summer. I saw some guys waterskiing out there on Sunday actually. (no wetsuits!) Pine Lake and Beaver Lake are even warmer.

Totally you can. We might have a northwest bias a bit because we are used to the colder water (I saw kids swimming in lakes in Wasilla during winter.....) but it should be swimmable.

It varies of course, like if it is a fresh water stream straight from snow melt, or if it is a manmade lake... or not as active water lake. But overall, it is swimmable.

Beaver Lake in Sammamish is an especially nice place to swim.

They have scheduled open water swims at Madison Park Beach in the summers. Andrews Bay in Seward Park is also great for open water ... most wear wet suits for both.

The lakes are very swimmable, and lakeside parks are popular in the summers. Lake Washington is great, I've never heard of nor seen anyone wearing a wetsuit for Lake Washington, and I lived in the Seward Park area when I first arrived in Seattle.

I live a couple blocks from Seward Park and swim in the bay nearly daily from June to September ... the open water swimmers (those swimming 1/2 to 1 mile in the bay) almost exclusively wear wetsuits. Those at the beach ... no wetsuits.

I've swum across to Bellevue and not needed a wetsuit. But...whatever.

Swimming in Puget Sound, however...I'd recommend a wetsuit. Or just swimming for thirty seconds.

We live down the street from Pine Lake in Sammamish and kayak there often and we have a boat and are on Lake Samm 2-3x a week in the summer. We were already kayaking a few weeks ago on Pine Lake and our kids were wading up to the knee. Folks definitely are swimming in wetsuits already as triathlon season is near. By late May to mid June our kids are often in the water without wet suits when they are tubing and swimming in the water completely by end of June into early to mid September with no problem. It is a lot colder than the Texas waters we came from but it's WAAAAAYYY cleaner We love it!
