That said, I suppose after living here a while I'll start to spot the warts.
Well, I've been here for nearly three years, and I absolutely love Seattle Center. Sure, it's kind of kitschy, but that's part of its charm. Sitting by the fountain on a clear summer day, with the Needle in the background -- man, that's just about the most beautiful thing I've seen in Seattle. The Science Center is terrific, my daughter loves the Children's Museum -- I can't think of a bad thing to say.

I do hope Key Arena sticks around, even if it has to be repurposed.

More like 7, there's the Opera House, the 5th Avenue Theater, Showbox, Benaroya, and the proposed new arena.

The Science Center is nice but has change since I was in 1st grade 12 years ago. I think a remodel of the entrance would be nice. Love there exhibits though! King Tut was awesome!

Like the one at West Edmonton Mall.

I agree, King Tut was a lot of fun. We went to see it shortly before the exhibit closed.

As crowded and congested as that area is already I don't think that a water park would work out...

Maybe not that area but if one was in the city that would be good too. Just proposing future uses of the Key after all the events are gone.

Default I Like The Seattle Center

"Better days"? When? During the Fair, yes, it was a great fair. I went. The facilities were new, but there are more permanent facilities now, like Bagley Wright Theater, EMP, the IMAX theaters, Chihuly, the skate park and the SW parking garage.

As for losses, there's the Fun Forest. Sorry to see it gone. The flag plaza, whatever restaurant was at the SW corner of the Center House, including Yukon Jack's outdoor deck. Are the losses why you think it's not a "great downtown venue" anymore?

The venues are improved since the close of the Fair, and certainly from "20" years ago with the improvements that were made in '95 and '96: Key Arena, the Children's Theater and the fountain, allowing people to get wet without risking injury. McCaw Hall and Fisher Pavilion were renovated in '01 and the Center House/Armory last year, adding two outdoor decks. As for the other facilities, from what I've seen, except for the vacant Mercer Arena and the stadium, they seem to be doing fine. There doesn't seem to be any activities in need of Mercer Arena. The stadium could use a face lift but I guess they're trying to decide on its future first.

The place certainly isn't yearning for activity. There's the Seattle Opera, PNW Ballet, dance and theater groups like Seattle Repertory Theater, ethnic celebrations and events like the beer festival at the Pavillion and Center House/Armory, art exhibits, Seattle Storm, Seattle U basketball, roller derby, high school football, ice skating, Vera Project, SIFF, Teatro ZinZanni across Mercer, Seattle's Best Happy Hour, Bumbershoot, Folklife, and concerts, including KEXP's summer series at the Mural.
