Kemper Freeman plans $1.2 billion expansion in Bellevue | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times

Eastside real-estate developer Kemper Freeman said Monday he’ll begin construction next year on a massive, $1.2 billion expansion of his shopping and dining complex in downtown Bellevue.

I cannot believe how much Bellevue has changed in the last twenty years...

Kemper is not one to sit around, he likes to build, and most likely will do well With the retail climate in Seattle getting worse all the time (parking rates, road work, bridge tolls and panhandlers) more and more east side people are likely to avoid the Seattle malls.

Is he still opposed to the light rail expansion? If he is, he's an idiot that needs to learn that not everyone will want to get stuck in a 30 minute, 3 block backup going to Bellevue Mall.

He is, but there's not much he can do about it at this point. He sued to prevent light rail from crossing the lake, and it went all the way to the state supreme court. The Bellevue downtown association, which was founded by his father, opposed him on it, and he left their board shortly thereafter.
The Freeman family, while good at making money, has been on the wrong side of history for several generations. His grandfather was a newspaper publisher and founder of the "Anti Japanese League of Washington", calling for Japanese Americans to be put in internment camps. Land that was previously stawberry fields in Bellevue farmed by Japanese Americans eventually became the property of the Freemans.
His father funded the campaigns to defeat light rail in 1968 and 1970.
Kemper Freeman has been a longtime opponent of light rail. He also fought to keep the Bellevue transit center from being built. He was unsuccessful at that, but since opposing rail has been such a passion for him, he now claims to be a supporter of expanding bus service( But heavens no, not to Bellevue Square.)
He has bankrolled at least one of Tim Eyman's initiatives.
I don't know what to think about mainland Chinese paying cash for homes on the eastside. Between them, and investors paing cash, and very low inventory...it's just not the funnest of times to be a home buyer.

Freeman should be paying more attention to brick-and-mortar retail trends before investing too heavily in projects that need big anchor tenants.

Awesome! With the light rail coming soon, it'll definitely be a "real" city.
