I found a nice apartment in West Seattle, and would just like to hear what others have to say about the neighborhood. I've heard and read that it's a pretty nice neighborhood, especially North Admiral. I lived in Ballard and Queen Anne last summer but never had the chance to visit West Seattle.

I'm moving from out-of-state this time and want to know how safe this area is :

From Google Street view, there's a steel mill around the area and some of the other houses look 'bleh' but I can't make anything out of just Google Street view.

For the sake of others who might come across this thread looking for opinions on other areas in West Seattle, is it generally less safe the more south you go?

My sister and bro in law lived slighty north of the Shorewood area for a few years near west Seattle Reservior and they stated it got pretty scetchy and unsafe in that area with a lot of murders, shootings and homicides along with gang activity, so i'm gonna be avoiding that are when I hopefully relocate to Seattle this year

By the way, do not live too close to the Duwamish River, as it is a superfund site:

Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Site

So, cross Highland Park off your list.

Go figure, thats right were my sister and brother in law lived for a few years right in that area and they moved away because of the bad crime.

Seattle City Clerk's Geographic Indexing Atlas

Going by the official city map and not the sometimes creative boundaries determined by the needs of real estate agents, the area marked "Delridge" is less safe than the area marked "West Seattle."

What makes that area bad? I'm an out of stater hoping to move to Seattle this year and coming from a town of around 50k most of my life, Seattle is utterly huge in my eyes, so its a big adjustment for me and to know what area's to avoid will help me in my job and apt hunting search

Just don't live anywhere near the following areas in Seattle:

White Center, Skyway, Rainier Valley, Lake City, Bitter Lake, International District, some of Capitol Hill. I've taken the liberty for you:

Can I get a thumbs up for the wonderful piece of art I just created?

I just found this article and im marking these area's on my seattle city map. Can anyone confirm, deny or add to these listed bad places to avoid in Seattle for a new out of stater?

Safe and Dangerous Places in Seattle - AOL Travel Ideas

Quote:
If you're looking for scary, dangerous areas to avoid in Seattle, a good place to start your search is with the City of Seattle's violent-crime statistics, which are listed on the city's official Website. A recent poll shows that many Seattleites don't feel safe downtown and the city's crime statistics validate their concerns.

To avoid being a victim of violent crime in Seattle, you will be well served to avoid the following five areas:

The area surrounding Pike and Pine streets ranks high for violent crime after dark and is not the kind of area where you want to be caught cutting through an alley in the middle of the night. Crime statistics aside, your common sense should tell you that this is not an area where you want to be wandering around alone on foot late at night.

The area from South Dearborn Street to Yesler Way is not a good place to get a flat while traveling alone at night. Located near the I-5 and I-90 interchange, this area is also home to "The Jungle," where large numbers of homeless people camp, and there were two homicides in 2009. While I was on my police ride-along, we patrolled this area on foot. I can tell you that it's dirty, disgusting, and one of the more dangerous places in Seattle.

M L King Jr. Way South to the South Boeing Access Road is another area where you don't want to get lost on foot or, for that matter, in your car. According to Seattle's violent crime statistics, this area is listed as having 234-739 violent crimes per square mile.

The area to the east of I-5 heading east on East Yesler Way is probably remembered best for the homicide of Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton in 2009. This corridor between Lake Washington and Puget Sound has a high incidence of violent crimes year after year including homicides, robberies, and assaults.

Another area to avoid in Seattle is the one between Blanchard and Bell in Belltown. This area, late at night, is like something straight out of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video. The area is known for drugs, and if you are interested in experiencing either robbery or an assault, this is your place. While the Seattle Police Department has increased the number of foot patrols in this area, it still needs major improvement.
