Is it true you can't actually buy a phone but are stuck in some restrictive plan with a Telco when you buy your mobile phone? Anyone have experiences with the main Telcos? The main ones we have heard mentioned are Horizon, TnT (maybe got that one wrong) and Sprint (or was it Sprite). Anyway, any feedback on the service given would be great.

I think it's actually a serious question from someone who lives out of the country. The vocab. (mobile, telco) sounds British.
Just my opinion...

Well, it's not true. Most everyone buys a phone and you can even buy a used one as long as it's from the same provider. Our biggest carriers are Verizon, A T & T, Sprint, Century Link, and T-Mobile.

Verizon - Best coverage/speed, highest price
AT&T - works well, in some cases better coverage than Verizon but only in Seattle Area
Sprint - Haven't used them, but seem to be somewhere between AT&T and T-Mobile
T-Mobile - Cheapest and most flexible option, but coverage is spotty (they're the low end carrier around here)

Best option is to ask around and see what people who live and work near you use. I have Verizon and AT&T phones, and in my specific location AT&T is more reliable. We have to boost the Verizon signal inside the house to keep calls from dropping. Overall all though, Verizon works more often when traveling.
