What is the cost? Is it something that everyone has to do, or is it an option? What is the procedure going across the border when you have one of these?

$60.
Optional.
You show your EDL to the officer who asks for it, they scan it.

We go over the border often and it's just as easy to get a passport, and then you can go to other countries besides Canada. We also got the Passport Card which is what we use to cross into Canada.

What's the difference between the passport and the passport card?

The card has electronically readable chips so gets you through faster but only works for Canada and Mexico. You can keep it in your wallet and not worry about losing your passport. Has the same picture on it.

Passport (book) and card is $165 plus whatever you may have to pay for the photo. Book only is $135. Card only is $55.

Thanks for the tips. I couldn't afford paying $165 and I don't plan to go outside North America anytime soon. I think I can get the Passport card or edl.

Also, the ID and the password card only work if you travel by land (car, bus, train) and maybe ferry, but not airplane

Get a passport and the trusted traveler card which gets you into Canada with no lines at the border and the best part, I don't stand in lines when flying in and out of most US airports. My trusted traveler card is called Nexus and has to be renewed every 5 years for $60. They do a thorough background check in order to get it and then you are good to go! It has made flying feel like the old days....no hassles
