When high school football is reported in more depth and coverage on the sports pages and sportscasts before the results for NHL games I think you are over estimating the amount of support for an NHL team in Seattle.

It would work for sure, remember, that while folks may have doubts about the local Seattle populations ability to support and NHL franchise, the spill over of support from SW BC (or even a little from metro Portland) would make up for a lot of that.
However, the new arena being built for the Thunderbirds in Kent (some of it with federal funds) proably hurt this possiblity even more.

I'd love to see an NHL team in Seattle. I was kind of hoping that the rumor about tying in the Sonics proposed arena to an NHL team would have some substance.

I think that the reason the NHL doesn't get much interest so far here is just because Seattle doesn't have a team.

However, I agree with the posts that arena politics would probably prevent any NHL team from coming here -- or Seattle getting an expansion team (not that the NHL is in much shape to expand right now).

As far as a name -- current NHL teams are named after a wide variety of things (trivia: the NY Rangers are called that simply because and early owner's nickname was "Tex" -- "Tex's Rangers").

I like the "Seattle Mammoths" -- might not make sense at first, but Washington's state fossil is a Wooly Mammoth. The name fits in with the hockey theme (Ice Age), would make a cool logo, and we could have a mascot named Wooly. Drawback would be fans chanting "let's go mam's" which could be interpreted as a politically incorrect request for breasts, causing, the P-I and other pundits to wail and lament the barbarity and insensitivity of the sport.

Lol thats amusing history I think an NHL team in Seattle would be excellent. It just doesn't seem right not having an NHL team here.

It can be done. We have baseball here, why not the NHL.

The Sonics got named for an airplane that never got built ( The SST), and since we lost the contract for the tanker to that consortium that included Airbus, why not call the NHL team The Tankers?
