i just moved here from west LA area almost a year ago. i grew up in SF and have also lived in/around the bay area for a long time. have you ever thought of moving to SF or around the bay area? lots of liberals, i think your family would fit well there. i LOVE the bay area, i think it's waaay more diverse in every way than washington, and not that much more expensive. or have you thought of moving around within the LA area? where I'm from (west LA, Santa Monica, Venice, etc) your family would not even raise one eyebrow.

Thanks for trying to talk me out of Seattle! lol It's not working.... I'm still coming!!!

I grew up in Encino, CA. and moved to The OC... I have enjoyed all the places. Really looking for change!
I have lived in Santa Monica.... Great Place! Not where I'd want to raise my kids.
I have lived in Mill Valley in Marin County.... Love that place too! Just a little too "old" for me. The people are a much older group. Probably because that's the only people that can afford it!

We're moving to Seattle this summer from SF Bay Area, and we decided to rent in Bellevue for the first year or two and then decide. To me, Bellevue has the best of both worlds in terms of a very urbanish, lively feel with great schools, and the downtown is extremely walkable. However, I understand that you don't want an apartment. I understand your hesitation to rent first, we have a 4 year old boy too and I didn't want to do an extra move and possibly switch schools after he starts; however, as I realized from experience, it's extremely risky to be buying from out of state. There are things about a place that you can't know until you live there, and the best way is to go around and get a real feel for the different areas.

I have heard not-so-good things about Seattle's school district, even in areas like Queen Anne, unless you're planning to go private. Something about the district being poorly managed and not funded well; I think there's a thread around here on it if you search.

In any case, wherever you decide to settle, good luck, and invite us to your party! You guys sound like a fantastic fun family!

Oooh I like your name EvilCookie! Yes invited! Thanks for the wonderful comments about my kids.... ummmm but what about the parents? lol just kidding! I loved SF. I lived in Mill Valley for a bit. Loved it there just very very costly. SF is our second choice over Seattle. I like the SF Vibe... it's just super expensive to do just about anything.

We moved from Encino! Right around Hayvenhurst and Ventura. Grew up in SanMo. Small world.

Yep, we lived by the Jackson compound. We even went to the memorial (won the ticket lottery that morning). I lived in Northridge, too! Studio City, Sherman Oaks. All over the Valley, really. We were back in Calabasas a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't breathe. I have become a Washingtonian! Now when we travel I love telling people I'm from Seattle.

I think you'll love it here. It's just beautiful, and extremely livable.

The valley was fun... I just went back myself and couldn't imagine living there again. it's changed so much! We used to hang out at Jerry's Famous Deli every weekend. Oh the memories! My dad owned a restaurant in Encino named Cafe Vesuvio. We had so many celebs come in it was crazy. MJ used to shop at the baseball card store a few doors away. Was quite the site when he showed up.

We're somewhat in the same boat. We just moved to a rental in Redmond from Santa Rosa (California) about 4 months ago, and have been trying to find a town/neighborhood we love, with good schools, good walkability, and close proximity to Seattle's vegan stuff. We have 2 young children not quite school age, but they will be soon enough. I really do want to buy, although just not finding a lot that appeals to me in our price range... so we might be looking to move to another rental.

So far Edmonds seems to have a lot of what we're looking for, but I wish the Sounder train ran every hour to downtown! I actually don't like the Edmonds Bowl that much, because I'm generally more attracted to more trees, bigger lots and nature... though I do want the water view or a short walk to it!

Bainbridge Island once seemed like a good option, but when we visited it just didn't feel like a great fit. It seemed like it didn't have the walkability I wanted, and it felt quite far from a lot of the vegan food which was one of the things drawing us here. You guys should check it out though, it's got great schools, extremely liberal majority and just a very nice ferry ride away from downtown.

In any case hope you make it up here! We landed in a really crappy rental due to a hasty decision, but we're thankful that we're here!

I'm going to throw in another vote for Kirkland. I spend an insane amount of time there waiting for my kid and thus am always wandering around. I love it there. If we ever left Issaquah which we totally won't, that's where I'd drag us A lot of the new Bellevue has a strange vibe to it, like it was forced to happen and now it doesn't know what to do or be. Old-school Bellevue is very laid back and nice. I don't think I could hang with Redmond just bc of the Microsoft traffic. Their schools are not as good. (IMO, if you're gonna live on the Eastside, might as well take advantage of the schools)

oh, and gazillions of Seattle-ites go to the Eastside every day. Just look at 520 north in the morning rush hour or south in the evening. NIGHTMARE parking lot.

I absolutely love Kirkland. Fantastic place to live and raise kids. I was in Kirkland in December and was leaving Cactus restaurant and looked up into the sky to see a Bald Eagle soaring over head. He did a few circles and then flew off. It was truly an AWWWWWW DAMN moment! And if it wasn't an Eagle than it was the Margarita I had that made it look like one. Either way it was a great moment
