Can someone further flesh out for me the enrollment differences between option and attendance area schools? I've read just about everything I can find on the SPS web site. For instance, say I'm moving to Seattle with a child enrolling in kindergarten, I find a place to live in Columbia City, and want my son to attend Orca K-8. Am I virtually guaranteed a spot at Orca, or since it's an Option School, am I in the lottery with folks from other areas who also want to attend Orca?

You should check out Seattle Schools Community Forum - lots of very involved and concerned parents there, and they can probably answer your questions.

The way I understand it, you would not be guaranteed a spot at Orca if other students registered for kindergarten before you did, and they were also in the area. They have different scoring. for instance, if your child has a sibling attending the same school it may carry some weight. The policies have changed, so I'm not completely current, but if you're in the area where Orca is the option school, and you register in person at the school district headquarters at the first possible minute, your chances of getting your child into kindergarten are pretty good. Historically, ORCA is a much loved place.

Assuming that you enroll during open enrollment then you're in the lottery for the open seats which are not guaranteed but you'll have a better chance than anyone applying from outside the geozone1. Several factors like having a sibling already there are also considered. This year I think there is a 10 person waiting list for K there to give you an idea of how it usually plays out.
