Hi all,

We are looking at Bright Horizons in South Lake Union. But we have received feedback that SLU is not safe for kids and family. Would it be safe to send our kids in SLU or even downtown?

Kindly advise.

Thank you
Cindy

I would have zero qualms about sending my child to daycare in SLU or downtown, in terms of safety.

I have two children who have been in pre-school in the Seattle area for three years. My partner works in SLU as do several of my friends. I commute in from the suburbs and I feel that SLU is as safe for children as on the Eastside.

If anything, it would be harder to get a spot in a daycare or pre-school with a lot of green space. There are many more choices for pre-schools if you're willing to get on Aurora and drive up to Ballard or Green Lake. Those pre-schools and day cares are more plentiful and some of them will take your kids outside to play in green space daily. To me, that would be worth a short drive if you can do it.

Check out Seattle ParentMap for pre-school options and inside scoops on Seattle education:

Preschool - Education - ParentMap

There is a search function up top, too.

Good luck and don't worry too much. If your kids are nearby where you work, that's a huge plus for them in terms of commute time and more time with mom and dad, and if that's why you chose SLU, I'd stick with that rationale. Time with mom and dad is important.

After reading this thread I noticed the Bright Horizons this morning near the Whole Foods. It's not an unsafe area at all. Urban yes, but a very sparkly urban versus a gritty urban. I agree with MmeZeeZee - a quality day care center closer to work is preferable to one near home, in my experience as a mom.

My kids are older now but we are all over downtown almost daily. My 10yo rode the bus home alone from downtown yesterday (a milestone!) while his younger sibling and I headed off to the U-district. I think the 'danger' of downtown Seattle is quite overblown.
