WSDOT - 2014 - Summer construction heats up with big closure of westbound I-90 in July

Looks like some fun going on next weekend and all throughout the following week thereafter! 520 Bridge shall be closed July 11th thru the 13th and then this I 90 mess for a whole week. Then of course 520 will be closed the weekend AFTER the I 90 closures. Summer time is a time for less traffic.......until WSDOT decides to create MORE traffic.

I know it needs to get done but it's a shame that this I 90 major roadwork is gonna screw everyone. I don't get off until 7 or so when 520 is decent if not in great shape. Now to get back from Bellevue to Seattle is gonna be rather interesting that week.

Any thoughts on the super fun construction operations going down this summer?

Do you remember the scene in Princess Bride in which Westley is in the Pit of Despair and has just gone through The Machine and Rugen asks him how he is feeling? And he makes that whimpering sound?

That was basically what came out of my mouth when I saw that announcement in orange lights over my commute yesterday.

Ah, summer in Puget Sound. Yes, great weather, but also the best time to pour concrete and lay asphalt.

So what's your poison? 520, 405 N or S, 522, a plane ride or do you wanna do what I'm gonna do and swim across Lake Washington? Ok, maybe I added some extra money for tolls. But 520 is gonna be a nightmare as well almost any road.

So the REAL question becomes: What movie are YOU seeing in Bellevue?! I've got my eye set on Sex Tape and Snowpiercer, but don't let ME affect your decision!

I'm thankful I'm not one of the construction workers who might be sweating their butts off that week.

Also, sounds like a good time to work from home if you can.

I was seriously tempted to get a hotel in Seattle for the week. Can't afford it, of course, but I thought... is Nickelsville still up?

It's been all over the community news here for about a week. I'm sure it's going to be terrible, but I was relieved to hear that at least 520 will be open... everyone was already making such a big deal about it over the weekend that I thought for a moment 520 was going to be closed AND 90 was going to be down to 1 lane. The idea of that happening is actually pretty funny. Except when it's not.

I've already instructed my husband to take 900 (Issy-Renton) to the airport next week.

Haha! If you're gonna get a hotel in Seattle, it will cost you dearly. Though the main area that will be affected is the Eastside trying to get to Seattle going westbound. I looked into Bellevue hotels and for a week's stay it will be at the very least $200. Most hotels range from $175 to $300 a night while the Days Inn is $99. The fact that we're THINKING about hotels makes me sad.

The bike lane remains open ... it's a very nice bike ride from Seattle to Bellevue (and back!). Plus it's fun to smile at single-occupant cars stuck in traffic backups.

tobester, if only I didn't have two kids behind me going to day camps in Seattle. I'd do a bike trailer on a trail or mostly-trail route but no way in downtown Seattle. Too many crappy drivers.

But for myself, yes!
