I would like to remove a tree at the edge of our backyard but want to know if it's considered a "street tree" or on "public right of way" or if it's on private property and hence can be removed without any permits/issues. It is a black walnut and not considered to be an "exceptional tree" and I am aware of the "3 non-exceptional trees with diameter greater than 6" per year" removal policy.

Basically the layout is: Street | Planting Strip | Sidewalk | Backyard with tree (right next to the sidewalk) | house

Is a tree located next to the sidewalk (but not on the sidewalk) and opposite the street considered to be on "public right of way" or private property?

I recently discovered that Seattle has a mapped inventory of trees, can you believe it? Here check it out. They are actually color-coded as to who is responsible for each, perhaps yours is noted?

Wonderful, thanks for the link!

That basically answered my question because there is a "public right of way" button that you can uncheck/check that shows which trees are public right of way, and they're all on the planting strip between the sidewalk and street, so I think I'll be good to go.

Glad to help! And kudos to the city for maintaining and providing such detailed public information. We discovered this resource trying to identify some beautiful big trees in our neighborhood.

Yep, it's a great resource but I did notice that the data hasn't been updated in about 20 years (!), so there may be some trees not listed on it (such as my tree which was planted less than 10 years ago by the previous owners.
