I am looking to make the move from Cleveland to Seattle not so much for a job but for the lifestyle. Up until I moved to Cleveland (for reasons I don't need to discuss here) I was a guy with a good IT job who lived for Sea and white water kayaking, climbing, back country skiing, mountain biking, back packing, fly fishing, etc. Here in Cleveland the only folks that have time to do these kinds of activities are 30 years older than me so I'm looking to move west for better opportunities. Does anyone know if the so-called Seattle 'freeze' is as evident in the outdoor community?

One way to make friends is to join the hiking org, the Mountaineers. There are canoe and kayak groups, too. Hanging out at REI and attending REI-sponsored events, like travel seminars, climbing workshops, etc., is another way to make friends and break through the Freeze. You're coming to the right place, if you're into all that stuff.

Honestly, the freeze exists. But life is what YOU make of it. If you want to make friends & be social then do it. Those who do not join you will be missing out!

Sadie is right!!! I've played in quite a few different co-ed leagues here in Seattle. IMHO, the Seattle Freeze melts a bit once others see you a few times. In most cases, everybody (and often times the other team) would go out for a beer afterwards and this was a great time to socialize. I know plenty of folks that hooked up thru co-ed sports.

Those soccer leagues, from what I've been told, melt right through the Freeze. They're great for people who like soccer. Those who don't have to find something else, and if you're not into all the outdoor activities, it's not so easy.

I made quite a few friends taking a month long rowing class. Even more after I joined the club. Easy to get to know a group of people when you are out on a lake in a boat trying to figure out how to row together. I haven't had much trouble connecting with people here but I am very extroverted. Most of the people in my class were new to the area and seeking opportunities to make friends.

Rec sports are the ONLY way I have found where you can legitimately melt through the freeze here. I play soccer and I hang out with my teammates (all of therm are from out of state which may have a lot to do with their awesomeness) all the time. I have noticed that delving into the arts scene or the pretentious hipster snob music scene or any other type of scene here and you will quickly begin to hate people. Definitely appreciate the arts and music scene here, but do so from a distance is my best advice. Avoid the people immersed in it like the plague. Definitely try rec sports or outdoor group stuff if you want to meet cool people.

I found it refreshing when I lived there that Seattle was one of the few large metros where most of the people didn't have that, "In your face, hey look at me!" mentality that a lot of U.S. metros unfortunately have. Seattle is not the best place to go if making new friends is a high priority for you, that's the honest truth.
