Hi all,

I am female, college educated, over fifty. Will be job hunting in Poulsbo, WA next year. Any input is welcome. Anyone have difficulty due to age? Lost job due to age?
Thank you.

Do you mind telling us what is your job search field? Jobs in Poulsbo proper may be hard to find (outside of retail, real estate, and medical) because it is a more remote location.

True, there are not a lot of jobs in Poulsbo. The biggest employers there are Home Depot and Walmart. You are better off living there and commuting 15 minutes to Silverdale or 25 to Bremerton. In any of these age discrimination will not be any better or worse than any other city.

Default curious about ageism in Poulsbo

I have experience in Accounting and Business Management, Software production/Testing/Sales and have also taught at the elementary level and have Life and Health Insurance license. Never had a problem finding employment in the past, but have been reading alot about older workers being laid off or having trouble finding employment. I would not be averse to taking part time in Retail while I research possibly starting a business. Last child heading to College and looking forward to new adventures...
Thanks again for your input!

Default Get Local Contacts

Ageism may not be so much of a factor as who you know. It is still a small city so it might be harder to land a desired position until you have some local contacts. My recommendation is to sign on to a temp agency in the area. Perform well and you will have local folks backing you as referrals.

And yes, it may be easier to land a desired job in Silverdale or Bremerton, but it's not a slog to commute there. I drive from North Kitsap to Bremerton daily and I'm rarely in stop-and-go traffic on Hwy. 3 (due to accidents and road work, not because of too many commuters).
