Maybe my blood is too thin but I can't handle the water temperatures in Washington and have never found water warm enough to suit me. I grew up white water kayaking in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia where the water was warm from May into October. I gave the sport up when I moved here because the water was too darn cold and I couldn't get Into the idea of having to put a wetsuit on for a sport that I associated with free movement.

But my little NW born daughter on the other hand jumped into an alpine lake last week with her friend where they swam and goofed off for hours with zero complaints.

She has hardy NW blood : )

Thanks everyone for the replies. I know the geography is vastly different. But sometimes there may be a weird lake out there with a different mineral composition or near a hot spring to make things a little warmer- you never know!

I started Kayaking in San Diego where it is not warm either- not as cold as the PNW however. Yesterday it was 95 outside and the water was 84 degrees. It was amazing

Next I will need to start investigating scuba diving. I sold all my gear when I moved to Austin as I refused to dive in lakes. I miss diving a lot.

There are hidden hot springs in the forests. But just for soaking, not swimming.

Get a hiking book, or try Googling it. They're here and there around the Cascades, and probably on the Olympic Peninsula as well.

My family loves Sol Duc hot springs. If you don't have a weekend to spare, go to Goldmyer Hot Springs | Home (be forewarned, reservations are crucial).

How about less developed hot springs a bit closer to Seattle than OP?
