I am hoping to surprise my husband with a retreat to the wilderness this winter. I'm looking to rent a cabin in an area with lots of possible activities for outdoor enthusiasts (snowboarding, snowshoeing....) and with great views. Can anyone suggest an area and more specifically a rental agency they have had success with? I don't even know where to begin. Thanks!

Packwood. Lots of cabins available, and you're basically on the Cowlitz river, 20 minutes from White Pass (downhill and x-country skiing), hiking in every direction, and Mt Rainier national park 15 minutes away (Ohanepekosh).

It's spectacular, though the weather can get rough in deep winter.

I agree - Scottish Lakes! It's off Highway 2...you cook your own meals on stoves in the cabins and use outhouses - no plumbing or electricity. There IS an outdoor hot tub that is wood heated...You really rough it there, but the place is spectacular. Lots of snow usually. scottishlakes.com.

To find a rental I would look more towards listing sites, I'll give you a couple of examples:

* Airbnb:
pros, it's uber popular, the renter doesn't get the money till 24 hrs after check in, Airbnb provides guarantees, has a easier to navigate site, cons newer and doesn't have the inventory of older sites.

* VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owners), pros larger selection, older so you can really sift through reviews, cons the transaction is entirely through the renter and guest.

As for where to look, I would go to something like google maps and look at the highways that cross the mountains, like highway 2 and highway 90 and look for cities like Leavenworth, Cle Elum, or both of those sites offer a map options so you can see what's available and where it is.

Any which way you go, sounds like your hubby is a lucky guy, this is an awesome idea!
