Hey guys, I'd like to move to Seattle, and I was wondering if you'd recommend Uptown or Ballard more for me. The biggest concern for me is if I, as a woman (who may or may not end up with a girlfriend out in public), would be safe there. I haven't been able to find much information on the crime rates in those specific areas, sadly, but from what I've seen, they're good for me not owning a car, and I'm not having much trouble finding a studio apartment in my budget.

Are there any things I should be worried about with moving to one of those areas, or other similar neighborhoods that you'd recommend (based on safety, walkability/public transport, and cost)?

Are you asking if you, as a woman, would be safe in general? Or if you, as a woman, would be safe being seen with another woman? Either way, the answer to both is yes.

Driving or bus from many parts of Ballard to elsewhere can take a relatively long time, if you care about that. I lived in Eastlake and loved it. There's a good, mostly local commercial strip and you're blocks from Lake Union, and it's a straight shot on the bus through South Lake Union (burgeoning tech central) to downtown. Also convenient (walkable) to the University District in the other direction, and to Cap Hill via Roanoke St.

Very safe, good sense of community. Say Hi to the folks at Voxx coffee and Pazzo's pizza!

Ballard is somewhat isolated but it's also very self contained, so most of what you need as far as activities, entertainment and shopping is near by. Also there are tons of car2go around, which is a great option for when you need a car but don't want the hassle of owning one.
