We should start with the assumption that it will ever be done.

Seriously I think it's been worked on since we move here in 2011. My husband says it's how jobs are created... keep ripping up the roads and putting them back together...

It should be called Mess Street.

It's been called the Mercer Mess for decades, for various reasons.

But to answer the OP, I believe it's supposed to be 3 lanes in each direction east of Dexter, and 2 lanes in each direction west of there. I'm pretty sure the project plan and progress could be found on a govt. website somewhere (maybe Seattle DOT?).

This page explains the current construction situation, and if you click around a bit on that site, you can find the drawings. It will eventually be three lanes in each direction from (I think) 5th Ave to Fairview. It's already three lanes each direction east of 9th Ave or so. The three eastbound lanes should be open by the end of this month, while the westbound lanes will be finished sometime next summer.

The page I linked is good information, but it's not necessarily the whole story as far as closures go. I bike through the area daily and try to keep up on what's happening, but there are often unannounced closures to make life interesting. And yes, even SDOT refers to it as the Mercer Mess on its website.

Well, old timer, tell us more about what it was like in the pioneer days. Did you know Arthur Denny?

It'll be done. The east end is done and the west end is closely intertwined with the north portal of the 99 tunnel.
