It depends on which part of the cities you're looking in, as Ira said. Both are quite spread out. The most desirable part of Edmonds - Edmonds Bowl - is the part everyone is describing, the part down by the water with the very charming old downtown. But that part is also expensive because in addition to the charming downtown many of the homes have killer Puget Sound views. If you can't afford to be in that part, Edmonds becomes very comparable to Shoreline.

Shoreline also has some lovely and very popular neighborhoods, such as Richmond Beach, Innis Arden and - creme de la creme - The Highlands. Again, if you can't afford to live in those expensive areas, it's a toss up with Edmonds. Shoreline is a bit of an easier commute than Edmonds. I'd also give the slight edge to Shoreline schools.

I grew up in L.A. and have lived all over the world. When I came to Edmonds I realized I'd finally found my forever home. So I guess you know what I'm going to say. :-)

I prefer Edmonds. It's just delightful, particularly the downtown area. I love the farmers' market they have there on weekends.

If you have a musical kiddo...Shoreline has a strong music program.
