Both times I have visited Seattle (from Cleveland) I have been pretty amazed by the air quality compared to Ohio. Even though the humidity was in the 60-70% range, the air seemed cleaner. Is Seattle known for this, or is Cleveland's air quality so bad that it only made a difference to me?

Thanks, Joe

I think regular rainfall contributes to cleaning out the air...Then again, you're from Cleveland, so could be both.

The air is definately "fresher" and cleaner in Seattle compared to most metro areas thanks to the rain combined with the Pacific Ocean breezes. All visitors seem to notice this within hours if not minutes. Enjoy!

Occasionally a strong temperature inversion will set in and accumulate the city-generated pollutants in place for a few days, and then the air quality degrades. It doesn't happen happen often, though.

Jabm is right, it doesn't happen often -- and it doesn't last long because the winds come back in from the ocean and disperse the air. Also, it's never the kind of killing, unbreathable air such as the L.A. smog used to be.

Another reason for the clean air, besides rain and breezes, is the dense forests around us. Good ol' hard-working trees!

Seattle is tied with Austin, Miami, and San Jose as 7th best in the nation on air quality overall. Climate and pollution control are why that is, I think.
