Glad to hear that the commute times of 6AM/ 8 PM are not too heavy. Homesinseattle, would you recommend commuting by care from LFP/ Bothell areas as you suggested or trying to find a place closer and brave the public transportation system?

I think either one would be a good option.

Hello Tobester, thanks for your response! I will definitely look into taking the bus. Would the bus system be relatively safe at around 8pm? I'm sorry if this comes off as ignorant! I'm from an urban area with a very unsafe public transit system. Thus, as a single woman I've gotten used to commuting alone by car. However, I'm willing to learn!

...

Thank you! My public transit options will definitely have to be something I discuss with my employer and figure out ahead of time. I see many test runs in my future!
Traffic in Seattle is awful, although you'll be going to work earlier and returning home later than many. A lot of people work flex hours here, so starting work at 7 won't protect you from getting stuck in morning traffic jams - leaving for home at 7 should be better.

Check and see if Children's will foot the cost of a monthly pass and Orca card - many employers do. That's over a $100/month value, plus you'd save on gas and on wear and tear on your car. You might also be able to save on car insurance, if driving mostly on weekends.

Compared to most large American cities, Seattle is very low-crime, especially north Seattle. I ride the bus frequently in north Seattle, including in the U District, and have never seen any issues. It is pretty usual to take transit to Downtown and many surrounding neighborhoods, where free parking is non-existent and paid parking is in short supply and expensive ($3-4/hour).

There has been some issues around UW, with thieves targeting students walking around alone late at night. The police are dedicating extra personnel to the problem. I doubt it will be an issue earlier in the evening, since there are generally lots of people out and around. There are also homeless in the U District, as in many parts of town, but they are generally harmless.

For cheaper rent, look at Lynnwood and surrounding areas, which have lots of apartments, with one-bedrooms starting at around $900, versus $1,200-1,500 in the U District and surrounding areas. Very suburban, however, and the commute will be much harder (which is why the rent is less). For instance:

Having grown up in Edmonds I'm wondering if the commute from my fair town of Edmonds or Lynnwood to Seattle would really be that bad these 2015 types of days. Is that 15-mile commute really insanely hideous? I've been away from Puget Sound since 2003 and I commuted from Burlington ta Everett (Boeing plant) every day and back. 1 1/2 hours in the morning and 1 3/4 hours ta get home to Burlington up in Skagit County. Bad enough then and probably worse now, eh?
