What kind of ethnic food/groceries do you like? I am a crazy world traveler when I'm not working and have scoped out most of the places. North of Seattle, there is a large Korean community and excellent Korean restaurants in Lynnwood/Edmonds. Aurora Avenue North (also called Hwy 99) is ground zero for this kind of thing. You will also find a number of very good Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Thai, East Indian, Hawaiian restaurants in this part of town. There are a few Asian groceries, some quite large. As you get closer to Seattle (University District) you have even more restaurant choices (Pakistani, South Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Szechuan, Taiwanese, Mediterranean, Persian, Salvadorian, authentic Mexican).

Good luck finding decent housing that is reasonably affordable ... and if you do, be prepared for bidding wars. You are now competing with a lot of cash-rich foreigners and tekkies. The further north you go, the less brutal that process will be. But then your commute will increase substantially - it's just the nature of such a land-locked city with so many high-paying jobs.

Treehugger, these things you say are very true in Seattle and Eastside but the neighborhoods that would serve this OP best (Brier, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Lake Forest Park, Shoreline) are way more sane. With good strategy and research, it can be done. I do it every day. rydmpaboy, you will succeed!

Oh man, Seattle to Everett, obviously not the ideal situation but it could be worse. I would vote for you guys to be closer to Seattle and try to be on the east side of I-5. This is strictly only considering traffic, as this sounds like a major issue for you. I am going to be blunt, it is going to suck for at least one person. Maybe you need to consider who could handle a commute better, who has a more flexible job, who enjoys listening to music in the car, who works earlier, etc.

Kenmore is a city you might want to look at. You can get to Seattle Childrens without touching I5. Going to Everett you have 2 options, I5 or I405(then I5).
