My partner and I have been offered positions in Washington. We'd be working in Seattle.

We don't want to live in Seattle, but we don't want to live far away from it either, maybe 30-45 minutes (with traffic)

We have a budget of rent of $2000 for at least a two bedroom apartment. We don't need anything fancy.

What are the best neighboring cities to live in?

What kind of things do you like to be around? In-city neighborhoods? Suburbs?

A little bit of both. Somewhere where I don't have to drive to Seattle every weekend to go out and have fun. But the comfort of having a nice quiet neighborhood is nice too.

Check out Phinney Ridge, Ballard, Fremont, Green Lake, all nice neighborhoods not too far from downtown. They have a lot of character, pubs, cafes, etc.

OP did say they were interested in "neighboring cities" within "30-45 minutes (with traffic)" - that cuts down the possibilities considerably.

The OP did say " We don't want to live in Seattle". And then most of the recommendations are far neighborhoods within Seattle. So, taking them for their word, Phinney and West Seattle are out. They're in Seattle. So, neighboring cities you can get into Seattle within 30-45 minutes?
Renton
Tukwila
Burien
Mountlake Terrace
Kenmore
Bellevue
Kirkland
Lake Forest Park

Some parts of Renton some parts of Tukwila, and some parts of Burien are worth avoiding.

Burien seems really nice. Where should I avoid?

I like Burien, great little town core, cafes, coffee shops, character. I would stay closer to town or even farther west. I've sold a few homes in the Three Tree Point area of Burien down by Puget Sound, gorgeous.
