This morning it was 22 when I left home, and going down the hill was slippery, with the buildup of frost from the last few days and frozen fog that was in the shade and never melted. Here in Seattle it seems balmy at 33, no frost.

Whoops, wrong city. Where you want to go is Yakutsk, Siberia. Enjoy!

It is shocking and rather nice to see how little snow there is in Seattle and how much there is in the Cascade Mountains, just an hour away. Bottom line, you can have it when you want it.

Hi, am I supposed to get "winter tires" on my vehicle.? I used to live in Chicago, and never got winter tires..Chicago is mostly flat though.. I live in eastside and work on the eastside (10- 15 min commute, aren't I lucky?) The only time i have heard of winter tires - my relatives who live in Alberta, Canada switch over to winter tires. someone told me I need to do this - but they are not originally from this town and do not have a car (so what do they know?) but I was told I need these (from person without a car, and just moved here) to "get up the hills" thanks.

does anyone switch over to winter tires here, are they necessary?

Some people do, but mostly if they go skiing, or live in North Bend/Snoqualmie where they get more ice & snow. Here it's just not worth it. The last two winters we never got enough snow to worry about driving, and that's here on the plateau at 400-600'. We have gotten as much as 24" that lasted almost a week one year, and several other times 2-6" but then people just stay home unless they have 4WD and are brave.
People don't seem to realize that 4WD helps you go, but doesn't help you stop. The worst is freezing rain, when it's been in the 20s for several days and the first warm rain comes, it freezes on contact. One year I had 1/2 of ice coated the car and couldn't even open it, never mind try to drive with that ice on top of the snow. Again, that's rare, maybe 2 times in our 21 years here.

Winter tires are for snow. You don't need winter tires unless you only have summer tires (not all-season).
