whatever planet you're from or whatever planet you're on - B.S. is B.S & it's a small example of a much much bigger problem that goes into neighborhoods all over the world in every town

West Seattle works for some people working at Starbucks HQ, and it's very pleasant. Rents have been going up, there, though, as they have elsewhere. Check Craigslist for some of these neighborhoods, to get an idea of what your money can get you, OP.

If your daughter will be going to Community College from out of state (2 years residency/work are required to get in-state status), she'll be paying out-of-state tuition, fyi.
Yesler runs from Pioneer Square all the way to 32nd Avenue, just west of Lake Washington. So it's more than one neighborhood. 3rd and Yesler does have it's share of homeless people and public intoxication. Not exactly an area most people would consider wholesome. But go east a ways, and it's much nicer. Yesler around 20th has pretty dramatically transformed, and at the section of it where it ends in Leschi has always been pretty nice.

Almost all of the neighborhoods near downtown that used to be scuzzy have changed a lot. Some of it is barely recognizable.

Yah, that's close to Pioneer Square which also would be pricey.

When we moved to W Seattle, we called- I can't remember the number- but it was part of the City- and they told us the neighborhood rankings, as far as crime, etc, went. It's probably somewhere on the web now, too. West Seattle has some very pricey neighborhoods in it, some working class type neighborhoods, and some lower income areas. It probably has at least 6 to 10 neighborhoods/regions in it, if not more. It's too big an area to just go "oh, West Seattle. It's nice/bad/fancy/rundown/whatever." Depends on where you're looking out there.
