While Seattle is home to deranged people, it's mostly confined to elected officials.

In all seriousness, I think American culture everywhere is breeding more people who have the possibility of "snapping". I chalk this up to vast income inequality, hyper competitive culture, disconnected people because of work and the machines we chain ourselves to and lack of a substantive social safety net.

Thanks Marcia, not what I meant though. Pretty much all other "Western" countries in the world provide a "social safety net" to their citizens, in the form of family leave, healthcare, education, many things we don't have here. When you fall down in these other countries, the fall is softer. I think the lack of that drives people into despair often in the US.

The million dollar question: Who is Marcia?

Because the people doing these things are in despair? Without a job? Homeless? The thought of the CEO at Shell making so much more than them makes them snap? Can you connect the dots with anything factual or are you doing what so many people do nowadays, reach for anything and everything to make a case for something they think is important? I'm someone who lived off and on in Europe for over 8 years, believes in the social safety net, believes in free education, IMHO it's our culture that is to blame. It's not the free education or social safety net. It's not income equality. It's our culture. The difference in culture is obvious.

FYI, I don't know if everyone knows that Europe has a lot of people also barely making ends meet. They have homeless over here. They have beggars over here. There is plenty of income inequality. There are plenty of drug addicts. They even have prisons for criminals.

Caraway, I'm not saying these are the only thing that drive some people to despair. I do believe that they are contributing factors, though. I agree very much that our culture is to blame, that was part of my post.

Dude, that article is extremely old and these "serial killers" haunted other places.. not just Washington. Oh, also, it was a long time ago...
How does this have anything to do with Seattle today?

Ah, someday we hope to split our time between Seattle in the PNW and Santa FE/Taos in the "moon" scape of NM. We might be slightly deranged ourselves.

ETA: The bum shouting obscenities in Taos Plaza earlier this week reminded us of Seattle. Just like home.

Yep, bums in most places. More of 'em in some towns, though.
