I'm wondering if a large mainstream culture exits in Seattle. Everything I read sounds like most seattlites are either somewhat hippie like, alternative or introverted tech people. I know some people hate generalizing but I know there is often truth to generalizations. Wondering if someone more mainstream would feel like a fish out of water. Thx

What does "mainstream culture" mean? I guess I never liked that word, sounds too herd mentality-ish. Aren't we all a little weird in each of our ways? Doesn't that make the world great? If you are accepting of other's views, religion or lack thereof, politics, ethnicity, sexuality, then Seattle will be fine for you.

How could someone be "mainstream"?

If I have to define it then I think that answers my question. Thanks for the reply!

There's more to Seattle than tech. The city's full of lawyers, accountants, bankers and other financial services workers, corporate business owners, fishermen, university professors and university staff (there are 3 universities in Seattle, plus community colleges, and a UW branch north of the city), Boeing employees, city parks administrators and groundkeepers, restaurateurs and other small business owners--I could go on. Seattle, generally speaking, is mainstream. It just happens to have a huge tech niche.

I would think that common sense would tell you this.

Seattle has always struck me as pretty mainstream. When I was there, most of the tech people were on the Eastside (Bellevue, Redmond, Bothell), and the hippies weren't numerous enough to be particularly noticeable. On recent visits, I still haven't noticed a big tech presence. I think most of the tech workers live closer to downtown. IMO, the neighborhoods in north Seattle have hardly changed in 15-20 years, except that the UW has expanded, the Northgate shopping area has expanded, and that's about it. In other words, the mainstream parts of Seattle have expanded. BO-ringgg! But if that's what you're into, OP, you should probably live somewhere in the North End. There are some beautiful, quiet neighborhoods out there, convenient to shopping, too.

There's also the Seattle Symphony, the opera, and other high-brow cultural associations and events. There's some kind of Seattle Garden Club, Seattle has something to offer everyone.

OP? Are you still around?
