Now you're getting it. You went from 15 minutes to 45 min-1 hour.

Higher budget:
Issaquah
Bellevue
Sammamish
Kirkland
Redmond (pushing the hour)

Lower budget:
Renton
Bothell (over an hour and not that cheap anymore but good schools)

Just to clarify - none of those areas have public transit routes directly to SLU. As far as I know (and some things are changing due to the demand for direct transit to, or at least through, SLU), the closest you can get dropped off is Stewart & Denny, Convention Center Place, or Westlake Station, which then involves at least 1/2 mile walk (depending on which building you're in) or another bus or the trolley.

So typically it goes like this...

-Drive ~10-15 minutes to an eastside park 'n ride (unless you manage to find a house right on an express route, but that really limits your search area)
-Ride 35-55 minutes on a bus
-Disembark, and then transfer to another bus or walk the final .5-1 miles to SLU. (~10-20 minutes depending on if you wait for another bus, and how quickly you walk)

Ballpark time: 55-90 minutes.

You might be able to find a vanpool from some eastside neighborhoods. There are a number of them.

This is basically correct.

It's important to note that SLU in its current iteration is only a few years old. So, the transit system is only just now reviewing its transit options to SLU. That will likely be a process, however. In the meantime, aim for getting to downtown (preferably around the Westlake area) and then tack on another 10-15 minutes for the commute to SLU and that gives you a decent idea of what you are looking at commute-wise.

Kayela's estimates are pretty spot on.

Is there a resource you know of to find Vanpools from the Eastside?

It's not the Bay Area, where the booming tech companies have their own van services. The best you could do is public transit to downtown Seattle. This is a little confusing, because you started out asking about where to live that would allow you to make a quick commute to the south Lake Union area on light rail. It sounds like you've changed your mind, and are ok with a long commute from the East Side? Those are two very different inquiries.
