I am moving to Seattle from the DC area for a new job at Amazon. I have a few questions regarding where to live and whether or not I need a car in downtown Seattle. I currently have a car and I was wondering if I should sell it to avoid having to pay parking fees associated with renting a new place. As far as a place to live, I am looking for somewhere downtown preferably within walking distance to work. I like being around restaurants, shops, bars, upscale gym, and parks if possible. I'm male, mid 20s, looking for a 1 bedroom and I would like to keep rent below $1,700 if possible. Any suggestions?

Sell the car. Live on Capitol Hill!

Agree. Ditch the car. Amazon gives you a bus pass.

That's a lot of area. Any particular apartments?

All within walking distance of SLU - all have apartments. No specific buildings in mind.

Look at Lower Queen Anne first, west or north of the Seattle Center.

Westlake and Eastlake are west and east of Lake Union. Cascade is east of Fairview. Denny Triangle is south of Denny.

Yes, ditch the car. Especially at that rent level.

Amazon covers a large area so it would help to know which part. Some is close to the true CBD, and some is closer to Lake Union. Depending on that, Belltown, Dexter along the lake, Cascade, Capitol Hill, the Denny Triangle, Lower Queen Anne, First Hill...all good.

I also just moved here from DC about 2 years ago. Welcome!

If you want to live within walking distance of Amazon, plenty of the downtown neighborhoods already mentioned will be perfect. I'd say try to line up temporary housing or sign a 3 or 6 month lease if you have to from far away. That way you're not totally tied down if you don't like the apartment after moving here.

And yes, ditch the car. There are carshare services if you need to get out of town. But even coming down from Ballard is easier on the bus for me than it is in a car. We went to the permit office yesterday and spent $10 in parking (3 hours) but the bus would have been the same price ($2.50 each way per person for me and my wife).

W Seattle in the "Junction" neighborhood has great urban living with supermarkets, restaurants, bookstores, libraries and loads of bus stops. There are lots of apartment complexes. It would make getting around without a car a total breeze.
