Only went once and the burgers were greasy (versus in-n-out, smashburger, burger lounge, uneeda), and I don't think I will try them again unless stuck there which is unlikely.

Oh,bloom, sometimes greasy is good. Won't kill you even if you visit twice. For me, the flavor is great, the burgers don't overwhelm, and you leave wanting more. But that is just me. I will be a lifelong fan of Dick's hamburgers...a Seattle institution. Give them a 2nd chance.

Almost exactly the same. I've only been to In and Out once, and was sort of underwhelmed, so maybe Caliburger is slightly better?

In 'n out is over-rated IMO. I used to love it when I was in my 20's, but today seems to be too much of too much, if that makes any sense. The flavor is bland and the buns are not very appetizing. Could be a change in taste buds as I get older, but that is my review for now.

But again, back on thread, I would certainly make the drive up to Wallingford for Dick's, or down to Kidd Valley near U. Village.

Dick's burgers are grilled, not flame broiled. Other than that, they're no more "greasy" than any other grilled burger. They do have mayo, but just scrape it off if you don't want it.

I've been to In-n-Out several times. The main difference is that they cook their burgers to order, which means you have to wait awhile to get your order, and they don't spend any time under a heat lamp. In my opinion, it isn't any tastier (assuming at Dick's you fork out for the extra condiments and salt-to-taste). At Dick's, you make your order and get your burger right then - the shakes are made to order, however, so can take a minutes or two. The busier the better, because you're basically getting it straight from the grill, with minimal heat lamp time. It is also best consumed on the spot - not near as good if you drive home before eating it.

Also, if you ordered the plain hamburger or cheeseburger, you got what you paid for ($1.40 or $1.75 worth) - those are primarily consumed by kids or drunk college kids (the latter order them a half-dozen at a time). For a real meal, get a Deluxe, with fries and a shake.

Tom Douglas, James Beard award winner as Best Northwest Chef, named Dick's Deluxe as his favorite local burger:

Quote:
1. The burgers at Dick's Drive-In are a great balance of fat, special sauce, meat and bun. But what really makes them taste great is when they are paired with a shake.

Maybe it is also the flame-broiled method that also contributes to the unwanted aftertaste as BK has this issue. I'm glad to say I haven't eaten at BK or McD (or W's) in over a decade; we used to go there as a treat as a kid in the 1970s America.

I'm no food guru, but I also like pizza. For the record, I'm not super picky. I did enjoy Mod pizza just off University https://modpizza.com/locations/u-district/. I've only been there a few times. It's not quite "by the slice"- more like personal pizzas in a Subway/Taco Del Mar type of walk-along-and-choose-what-you-want-on-it way. Can't get too much closer to UW campus, unless you do Paggliacci in the HUB. I'm not a huge fan of Paggliacci, but it's fine.

As far as burgers- my husband loves Dick's, BurgerMaster, and Kidd Valley. Of those, I prefer BurgerMaster. I find Kidd Valley decent but super expensive for what you get.
