So, I am wondering for someone who does not have an account with any of the companies and they move into a new place - what companies should be called to switch on the water/electric?

What is the procedure and how long does it take for the companies to flick the switch?

At the moment I live with someone and they pay the bills and then I pay them but everything is under their account so I have no accounts with any of the companies but when I move, I would need such utility services.

Areas would be possibly:

Tacoma
Seattle
Ballard

Seattle (Ballard is in Seattle) has Seattle City Light for electricity, Seattle Public Utilities for water, sewer, and garbage. For natural gas, it's Puget Sound Energy.

If you will be renting, some utilities like water & garbage, may be included in your rent.

Thanks evening sun - yes. Some do not and the one I am looking at sadly does not.

So the Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities - do I just go to their website and sign up or is it more complicated than that? How long would it take for them to turn on the systems?

lostsoul, it's easiest just to give a quick call, just one number in Seattle for electric, water, sewer, trash and recycling: (206) 684-3000. One call does it all. Gas is Puget Sound Energy (PSE), the number is 1-888-225-5773.

lostsoul2015,

Since 2011, Seattle Public Utilities no longer opens accounts for rental tenants. SPU accounts must be in the name of the owner/landlord, who in turn will either roll the charge into the cost of your monthly rental, or bill you separately.

Tenants--Seattle Public Utilities

Hope this helps.

thank you northsea!

I ask because most of the listing I see is "tenant is responsible for paying water/trash/sewage/electric" which I get and to me that means I have to be signed up to some provider and then tell them where I am living in order to turn on/switch the services

The landlord can give you the SPU bill to pay, they don't care who pays it, just that it be in the landlord's name, so they can put a lien on the property if the bills are not paid. For SPU it makes sense because the water and sewer bills in Seattle are high.

Make sure the landlord isn't using a third-party company to bill utilities, including water/garbage/sewer costs, along with lights/heat/hot water, to their tenants, rather than roll them into the rent. This is increasingly becoming common with large apartment complexes. There has been a lot of complaints over how these costs are calculated and reported, with hefty fees and charges rolled into the bill owed.
