Sorry to burst your bubble, but Dallas came out almost 17% cheaper.
Is that adjusted for having to live in Dallas?

As a consultant how much are you expecting to travel? Do you anticipate being on a large long term project at a client location?

Easy access to SeaTac and freeways should be a priority, versus living without a car in some trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood.

It used to be very cheap, not anymore. Cost of living in Dallas is right up there with coastal cities now and its not getting better.
Property taxes are painful in Seattle as well since homes have sky high assessed values. Just browsing zillow homes for sale, there is no comparison, Seattle is several orders of magnate more expensive than Dallas. There are $700 shacks that look like they need to be torn down for sale in the Seattle city limits.

Dallas property tax rates are more than double Seattle's. These things tend to even out. (I pay maybe 0.8% of Zillow value.)

My house in Kirkland has close to the same value as my friend's in Houston and he pays 2.5x the property tax - Dallas isn't too different. About the same sized house and lot.

Hmm, "some trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood" has superior access to SeaTac and freeways (I-5, I-90, 520) than practically any other neighborhood in Seattle. Without a car, the light rail, Metro, and Zipcar options abound.

Property taxes in Texas, as well as utilities and insurance costs, are significantly higher - double to triple the Seattle cost. We have homes in Seattle and Houston.
