STG Presents Dance Theatre of Harlem - 50th Anniversary Celebration at The Paramount Theatre on April 27 & 28, 2019.

DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM (DTH) was founded in 1969 by the legendary Arthur Mitchell and his former teacher, the late Karel Shook, with the primary goal of providing access to the art form of classical ballet to people of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. DTH quickly grew into a globally-acclaimed dance institution that has occupied a distinguished place in New York City’s cultural landscape and at the forefront of American artistic achievement for 49 years.

Located on a block officially named “Dance Theatre of Harlem Way” in testament to its enduring legacy, DTH now comprises a professional touring Company, a school, and a broad range of community programs. Under the leadership of Virginia Johnson, a former prima ballerina with the Company who was appointed Artistic Director in 2010, the DTH mission has been revitalized to:

- Present a Company of African American and racially diverse artists who perform the most demanding repertory at the highest level of quality;

- Maintain a world-class school that trains young people in classical ballet and allied arts; and

- Provide arts education, community outreach, and positive role models for all.

The Company is a racially diverse, 16-member professional dance ensemble that tours across national and international stages. The DTH Company has performed in 41 countries on six continents, in 44 states, and in more than 250 cities across North America. Last year alone, the Company performed for nearly 60,000 audience members across the U.S. and reached more than 6,000 during its home season at New York City Center. Portrait of an activist
April 26 - June 2, 2019 (7:30 p.m.). Nina Simone: Four Women tells the story of an American singer, songwriter, and Civil Rights activist, and features her music (classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop) at Seattle Repertory Theatre. When “The High Priestess of Soul” Nina Simone heard about the tragic bombing death of four young girls in an Alabama church in 1963, the songstress turned to her music as a means of expressing the country’s agony. “Four Women” and Simone’s other evocative activist anthems sang a truth that the world needed to hear. And it is a truth that remains sung to this day. Through storytelling, debate, and music, Nina Simone: Four Women immerses us in the complex harmony of protest.

“Simmering and imperious”

As You Like It

By William Shakespeare
Directed by Kelly Kitchens
Performed at the Center Theatre

April 23, 2019–May 19, 2019

Lost and Found. Seeking her exiled father and escape from an oppressive court, Rosalind, disguised as a boy, flees with her cousin and a clown to the Forest of Arden. The woods offer not only freedom, but also a motley crew of characters, and the chance to experience life and love with a fellow outcast, Orlando, from a whole new perspective.
The Game of Love. This glorious comedy of love and change features the irrepressible Rosalind, Shakespeare’s most fully-realized female character. Intimate and light-hearted, the play subverts the traditional rules of romance. Gender roles, the natural world, and politics all get woven together into a beguiling and entertaining romance.
All the World’s a Stage. Wise fools, a magical forest, cross-dressing, young love…and wrestling! As You Like It has all the elements that make a Shakespeare play so much fun. Director Kelly Kitchens, a frequent Seattle Shakespeare Company collaborator both on stage and off, returns for this delightful dive into the beauty and complexities of love.
