Hi I will be relocating to Portland from Seattle. (due to my spouse's job). However I will be working in Seattle. I have the luxury of working remotely for 3-4 days a week and will need to be onsite for 1-2 days a week. I definitely don't want to drive every week. What's the best way to commute? Open to Train, Rideshares. Flights are a pain.

Any suggestions?

My 25 year old daughter lives in Portland, I live in Seattle. I have considered the train a number of times but then always end up driving. I tend to choose an off traffic hour and am door to door in no more than 3 hours.

The Bolt bus is only $20 one way, but the earliest gets to Seattle 9:45. That’s about the same as gas cost if you get 30mpg. I didn’t check the return trip, but I see it often near King St. Station in the afternoon. We do that trip often and traffic at both ends and through Tacoma will Make it over 3 hours most days and times, but a bus at least can use carpool lanes.

I would favor Cascades/Starlight trains using the 2 week advance booking, $26-35. Within the 2 weeks fares increase from 26 to 41. Most trains will originate either in PDX or SEA, thus they will leave On Time. You can reschedule just prior to train departure to a later date. Starlight serves a la carte dinner going up, lunch coming down, not free but convenient and you meet interesting people. Also has a small bistro for coffee, snacks, microwave foods. Starlight may be late arrival into PDX since it originates in LAX or Late leaving because it awaits for Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago.

Cascades has a nicer bistro with club car and wifi. All trains have tables, in all cars. Business class is 3 across seating but you double the fare. Designed for I-5 commuters from Eugene to Vancouver BC.

We take the train 6-10x/yr, Salem to SEA, to visit son. We will no longer drive this (3.5 hours nonstop) because I-5's traffic is now unpredictable around PDX and Nisqually to SEA. Plus if you need to use the toilet in-between exits, you are SOL.

I've tried BoltBus, once. I got the $1 fare. More frequent but subject to I-5 problems. Pricing is same. Noisier and you lack the ability to move around. Pickup and Drop off in PDX is not convenient. SEA pickup/drop is at KingStation.

You can take a quick train from SEA to Tukwila or Tacoma to try it out.

Thanks all. I will be working near Kent area. So Tukwila is a great stop. Is there park and ride at Union Station and Tukwila?

As another poster said, Amtrak is a great option. It's a pretty trip (way more scenic than 15), comfortable and very relaxing. I usually get a bunch done on the way, too.
