Hi all,

I am in the process of planning a move to Washington state and I am trying to plan everything out. I noticed that a lot of restaurants on the east coast, are not on the west coast, primarily some chain restaurants that I like a lot.

One example is Carrabba's. Unless I am mistaken, you guys don't have them that way. What are the main chains that way food wise, or grocery stores.

Buca di Beppo is a chain along the lines of Carrabba’s Italian food. There are several chains although Seattle has some excellent restaurant choices if you want to deviate from the chains. As for grocery stores Kroger has Fred Meyer, there’s Safeway, QFC, Whole Foods, Metropolitan Market.

Kroger also owns qfc as well as Fred meyer.

Discount Winco is a serious contender with perhaps the lowest prices in the industry. Just be aware they don’t accept credit and you bag.

And Albertson's owns Safeway (Von's in California). Other Seattle groceries (not yet mentioned): Costco, Uwajimaya, Trader Joe's, PCC (co-op), IGA (Red Apple, Kress), Town & Country (T&C, Ballard Market, Central Market, etc.), Thriftway, Grocery Outlet, Cash & Carry (Smart Foodservice Warehouse Stores). There are Walmart Superstores in Bellevue, Renton, and Lynnwood, but none in Seattle.

Costco and Grocery Outlet can be affordable places to shop with good selection and interesting items. Trader Joe's are great stores and located all around the region too.

Neither Walmart in Bellevue is a Superstore, the nearest besides Renton are Monroe and Auburn. I think even Lynnwood is a neighborhood Market, Everett has a superstore. For groceries, one of the best is Metropolitan Market, we have one in Sammamish, but they are also in Kirkland, and several in Seattle.

Grocery Outlet is an interesting store, as they take on off-brands that still are of good quality. In my neck of the woods, they are opening a brand new store in West Pasco in a new suburban center, (Sandifer Parkway), and this tends to legitimize them as being welcoming to not just lower income, but middle income consumers. I will definitely visit this new location.

BTW, the Tri-Cities is also ripe for a Trader Joe's. I think it is just a matter of time...(have heard rumors they may move into the now closed ToysRUs at Columbia Center.)

Pnw, I've always heard that Trader Joe's likes to come into a metro area (like Puget Sound) and use their economies of scale to place stores all over just within that area. Based on their past methods, Tri Cities falls outside that strategy. That would be interesting (and frankly great) if what you have heard is correct.
