My SO recently finished a program at UW as an ASCP-Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Medical Technologist. They've been on the job hunt for the past couple of weeks and the results have been a bit...lukewarm, with relatively few recent postings. The ones that do seem to come up have various undesirable traits: Not full time, overnight shift, or a big reference library we know to be bad (They used to work at one...bad shift, toxic environment, etc)

They're a student with no experience or anything either, they've got at least 4 years working in labs in other roles and finished a very well-regarded program, so i'm a bit perplexed why the options seem so thin. I was under the impression that in general there aren't nearly enough MedTech for the jobs, but i'm wondering if that's just national and the local situation here is different.

I didn't find anything here for a search on this, so i'd appreciate perspectives from anyone here who works as a MedTech or adjacent to them. Are we just gonna have to buckle down and wait if we want something that does full-time, 9-5 day shift stuff or is this time of year just a lull in general for the field?
