It's been awhile since I made that trip...parents retired there...but I always took the Edmonds Ferry....If I am recalling correctly, it's a pretty easy drive once you get off the ferry....sorry I don't think I ever made the trip from Bainbridge, so can't really compare...hopefully others can give you more information.

OP is going to Sea-Tac? If so, I would recommend driving via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Where are you starting from? I do that run often, and I would drive around (Tacoma Narrows Bridge). It will be faster, just more gas, but no ferry fare. The traffic getting to Edmonds will be congested and if you miss the ferry you hope for it's another 45 minutes sitting there. The Bainbridge ferry from Seattle is more scenic and not that crowded midday, but that area around the terminal is a mess with the viaduct coming down and the construction. If you are already near downtown Seattle, though, the Bainbridge would be the fastest and most secenic.

If you are driving from Sea-Tac, that's a different story! Let us know your starting point....I, for one, would rather take the ferry, than drive any day! Even Monday! And as another person pointed out, downtown Seattle around the ferry dock might be a mess. I stick with my Edmonds ferry recommendation! How bad is the traffic heading OUT of Seattle on a Monday mid-morning????? Unless you truly are leaving from Sea-Tac, NOT Seattle. Very dependent on your starting point.

If you are in Seattle proper and going midday, I'd drive to Edmonds and take the boat across. Ferry lines won't be bad that time of day.

Either we are going to leave from Ballard and meet my parents at whatever ferry location or we are going to swing by SeaTac and pick them up, then go. if we pick up at the airport, sounds like it makes sense to go the Tacoma Narrows Bridge? If not and we go by ferry, do you think the trek up to Edmonds won't be that bad (traffic-wise) at about 1-2 PM on a Monday?

If leaving from SeaTac, I would take the bridge but IMO the ferry is part of the journey. It just sets the mood. An advantage of the Bainbridge ferry is it's frequent and one can have lunch at Ivars before leaving.

If you leave from Ballard at 1PM and head to Edmonds, you should be fine. At 2PM, there for sure are more cars on the road.

I’ve made this trip many times and this is the best advice, except during summer...the ferries are so crowded then that you’re better off driving around.
