Well?

Bartell Drugs has been a staple of the NW forever, I know homeless and druggies take utmost priority in Seattle, but really... is the goal to drive basically all businesses out of the city and just let the hordes of junkie losers, homeless, and criminals take over?

We should crack way the hell down on this stuff, no doubt.

The DSA just put out a big report on the habitual shoplifters/druggies that create much of the problem. This declaration might be related to that effort. It's not surprising in any case. Drugstores are probably the #1 front line...they're packed with both useful and saleable items that fit in pockets.

LOL - gawd, stop being so gullible.

That crappy tale is merely to somehow disguise the reality which shows you can walk a block away to Target and buy identical products for 30-40% lower cost.

A pathetic business like Bartell’s shouldn’t open anymore stores in downtown Seattle.

This reminds me of the case of Cody's Bookstore, on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, a couple of blocks from the university. It was a fixture of the community, a very popular bookstore through the 60's until it closed in the 2000's. In the 90's, the Berkeley City Council was soft on crime, including drug-dealing, and Cody's published editorials in the newspaper, saying they were losing business, due to drug activity literally on their doorstep, that caused customers to avoid the store. The owner stated more than once, that the problem was affecting their bottom line to the point that closure would be inevitable, if the issue weren't addressed. The city did nothing, and Cody's closed, as did several other businesses in the downtown area, a few blocks away. At that point, the City Council realized, that they'd lost a chunk of tax revenue, which was threatening their own salaries, let alone--City functions and programs. (No brainer, right? But the Junior Marxists in control of Berkeley's government seemed to be clueless about the city's revenue sources, and the importance of supporting local businesses by maintaining orderly sidewalk traffic.)

This could be Seattle's future. Berkeley went through a long phase of major storefronts in the downtown core sitting boarded up and empty.

Does Target sell groceries and OTC remedies, and prescription drugs? I haven't seen that.

Even if prices are higher, it still doesn’t justify the theft and violence that the store is facing, and if other stores such as Target are facing the same problem, which I’m guessing is the case, then they need to voice their concerns too and make the city listen and most importantly take action, rather than sitting on their hands.

I feel terrible for the Bartells on my block. I see shoplifters all the time and they seem unable to do anything about it.

Isn’t there a climate change thread somewhere for you to go apesh*t in?

I’m not sitting here saying it’s solely a problem with the junkies and not partially due to Bartell’s likely iffy management, but you seriously can’t sit there and deny that it’s a MASSIVE problem in DT Seattle that is spreading throughout Western WA

No doubt, drug stores and smal mom ‘n pops likely are impacted the most by these problems, sure larger retailers probably have a “bigger” problem, but they can also absorb it more easily

well, get used to it.
and...sorry about it.

we do not live in Seattle, but have bought at Bartell Drugs.
after the fish market, this is our favorite. beats all the coffee joints.
locally, where we live, taxes and fees and general disregard for criminal behavior
have ruined our downtown (across from a college campus) so much so that only
those who work there buy there. very few purposefully shop downtown.
