Washington is the 3rd Most Innovative Economy in America

Washington is one of the only three states that received an overall score of above 90. It is the third most innovative state in the country with a total score of 91. Washington is home to some of the world’s largest corporations including Microsoft, Amazon.com, Boeing, T-Mobile, Starbucks, and Costco.

Interesting that WA state led in 3 of the categories but the amount of STEM professionals pushed Cali to the top. Also, quite a separation between 3rd and 4th on list.

Looks like the numbers drop a lot after WA. The interesting story is OR which didn't do too poorly even though it's overshadowed by CA to south and WA to the north. I find that kind of surprising given the smaller scale impact a large corporate headquarters, investments, etc... Beyond Nike there is simply not as much there. Maybe smaller startups have made up some that difference, perhaps? I wonder if those numbers have gone up or down over the past decade for the 'Silicon Forest?' I know HP had some big layoffs a while back, but I'm not sure about companies like Intel. Looks like it dropped slightly since last year.

Overall ranking seems to follow collegiate population / support of innovation.
Oregon #2 in US Patents is a bit surprising, but there are some powerhouse labs in Oregon.

Washington is the best state in America, says U.S. News rankings

The home of Amazon, Microsoft and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks has been named the best state in America. Washington state earned top honors on U.S. News & World Report's rankings of the Best States, published on Tuesday.
The outlet calculates where all 50 states fall in their rankings based on several criteria, including health care, education, economy and opportunity. Certain categories are weighted more based on an annual survey with thousands of people to determine which issues are most important.
Washington was the top state overall, followed by New Hampshire and Minnesota.
"This confirms what we, in Washington have always known, that our state is great for businesses, workers, and investments, coupled with natural beauty and innovative, creative people," said Washington Governor Jay Inslee in a statement.

Utah was the fourth best state overall, according to the rankings, followed by Vermont. The top 10 overall states:
  1. Washington
  2. New Hampshire
  3. Minnesota
  4. Utah
  5. Vermont
  6. Maryland
  7. Virginia
  8. Massachusetts
  9. Nebraska
  10. Colorado
Meanwhile, three of the bottom five states on the list were based in the South: Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. The bottom 10 overall states, starting with the 50th state:
  1. Louisiana
  2. Alabama
  3. Mississippi
  4. West Virginia
  5. New Mexico
  6. Arkansas
  7. Alaska
  8. Oklahoma
  9. South Carolina
  10. Pennsylvania
The rankings also found Hawaii ranked as the top state for health care, while Massachusetts finished first in education. The full rankings are available on the U.S.

Can't we just be quietly successful and not say anything? How is bringing more people here a good thing ever?

^^^ 3rd most Innovative state and now the best state overall in U.S. Clearly Washington state and Seattle area is doing something right..

I have lived across Midwest, South and east coast before moving here and can say that Seattle is by far my most favorite city. From the evergreen trees, beautiful lakes and mountains to a vibrant city and unique suburbia (think Bellevue downtown or Kirkland lakefront), this place indeed amazing. Yes, there are issues with homelessness and increasing housing price, but it more than makes up in other areas.

Success is due to the talented people moving here from all over the country..a place cannot be the most innovative and trailblazer of modern technology (AI, cloud computing, aerospace, biotechnology etc.) by looking inwards only

IMO we have enough here already. We do not need more newcomers.

There's probably some geography at work too; we're the closest part of the mainland to East Asia, and we do a lot of trade with that part of the world.
