Yes’m, then if the tenant wants to stay for another year, in the new lease rent goes back up to market rate.

I’m in commercial, and we build in either an annual CPI increase or step increase over the term of every lease. Non one gets the same rent for more than a year.

Maybe I overreacted about my rent increase. It could be for the other units they have move in specials for new tenants.

If that were the case, they should have told you that, not that the published price was an error.

Management didn't handle it well, but often the person in the front office is a minimum wage clerk, or only getting paid with free rent and no money, so you can't expect too much from them.

I'm guessing the lower rent is a move-in special to entice new renters, The new renter will soon find the price goes up steeply with each renewal.

If OP pays his rent on time, keeps his place nice, and is not difficult to work with, there is absolutely no reason for management to try to chase him out. Other rents in the building who have also been there for as many years are most likely paying the same high price at renewal.

As for Mom being told on the phone that the rent is low and that she can see the apartment, she has not gone in to the office in person to actually be offered the low rent and a contract. That surprise is sprung after people are already roped in. Since OP said he would not pay the higher rent it becomes a waste of time to show him the unit.

There is a bit of a hint that the OP is a complainer. I don't know how bad that is, but tenants who are difficult to work with often pay higher rent to pay for the inconvenience of dealing with them.

I know that rent in Seattle has always been high. If OP is in a lower rent place, he can not realistically expect high rent service or high rent living conditions.

I am going to assume that OP is smart enough to dial down the temperature dial on the freezer and to not over crowd the freezer. If it is a lower rent place a fridge that keeps things frozen, but doen't do a deep freeze might be the best that he can get.

That would be "bait and switch", which is also illegal.
