well the first couple of years or so Id be focused on my work and not spending a lot of time (thus money) on extracurricular activities. Im a pretty frugal guy, doing volunteer work overseas in a rural community in Asia taught me how to live without much excess. If i can find somewhat affordable housing and its on a bus line to work, I think I can make things work. Fingers crossed. I know I love the Pacific NW.

I grew up in Tukwila. Buses from the airport pretty much went every direction and were/are reliable. Some routes has changed because of the light rail. As long as you're close to the main thoroughfares like Hwy 99, E. Marginal, Interurban, there's definitely buses coming and going almost all day.

I have to ask though. The job is in Tukwila area, but ~2 miles from the nearest station... Is the job closer to Allentown/Georgetown or Orillia? Allentown/Georgetown would generally be better for public transit.

yes job appears to be about 2 miles to the nearest light rail station and is closer/in the Allentown area. Looks like bus route 124 goes nearby, that might be the bus (or buses if i have to change along the way, which i really hope to not do) i could use to get to/from work.

What do you mean by the neighborhoods not walkable--is it because of safety issues, lack of infrastructure for pedestrians etc?

From that site my neighborhood scores a 46 out of 100.

What makes a neighborhood walkable?

  • A center: Walkable neighborhoods have a center, whether it's a main street or a public space.
  • People: Enough people for businesses to flourish and for public transit to run frequently.
  • Mixed income, mixed use: Affordable housing located near businesses.
  • Parks and public space: Plenty of public places to gather and play.
  • Pedestrian design: Buildings are close to the street, parking lots are relegated to the back.
  • Schools and workplaces: Close enough that most residents can walk from their homes.
  • Complete streets: Streets designed for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit.

A couple are "income restricted", but you should qualify if making <$57,000.

Catch the #124 on 4th Ave S for a one-seat commute: https://kingcounty.gov/depts/transpo...ow.aspx?id=124

The #124 also connects to the Tukwila International Blvd Station, so you could take light rail from Beacon Hill, Othello, etc., then transfer to the #124.

You could also look for a room-mate situation in Georgetown, which is served by the #124.

Thank you Crazy Donkey. I didnt know there were listings for housing with specific incomes. I definitely qualify for those listed as below 57k. Hopefully all they need to show proof of income is my job offer letter as im not employed yet. I looked into public housing, it appears theres a multi-year wait list for homes through them.

thanks didnt know there was such a thing as a walkscore, good to know. I havent owned a car most of my life, i can tell you that many of the places Ive lived at must have very low walkscores.
