Hello Washingtonians,
My husband received a work promotion and the two of us (early 40s) may be moving from Oregon to your state next summer. He would be setting up a new shop in Kent, so we are curious about living in that vicinity. We could afford to buy a home up to $600,000 (top of budget). I want a safe area to live in and we aren't against living 20 min from his work. I've read "farthest east in Kent is safest". I am an elementary school teacher and will be looking to find a school I'm happy to work at. It doesn't need to be the richest/best in district but I want to feel safe. I've looked at school ratings online/test scores etc but know as a teacher those only tell part of the story. What neighborhoods in Kent/Renton/Covington should we further research? Talk to me folks....what do we need to know? Thank you!

What about renting for a year in Covington? Might want to wait and get settled, see if Seattle fits, before committing to a purchase.

Kentridge is the best scoring high school ("8").

Hi Ephilli,

Congrats on the promotion! An idea for you: Maple Valley is only about 12 miles to Kent. Great community, Tahoma School District there has a very good reputation. Your budget would get you a nice home in a good location.

Covington and Maple Valley are generally nice and more affordable than Renton for example, the east part of Kent looks fine too.

Those parts of Renton that are in the Kent school district are quite nice, and very close to Kent. Maple Valley is close and noted for the good Tahoma school district. And within Kent, yes, the eastern parts are nicer and safer, but east of East Hill.
Kent doesn't have a great reputation overall, but that's old information, and that reputation these days is largely undeserved. Kent was recently designated as the tenth most ethnically diverse city in the US per capita. Which makes for some very interesting restaurants. There's fabulous Indian, Mexican, Iraqi, Kenyan, etc food.

I've done some research ahead of time. Avoid Renton High and Kent-Meridian. 1/10 on ratings.
