Thank you all for the suggestions. The more I think about it, the more I want to just sell most of our bigger items, and make a clean start once we arrive in Seattle. As a side note, I've actually turned the whole "move to Seattle" idea into an Excel sheet. As I work my way through all the steps involved in planning this move, I'll be asking a LOT more questions! So be prepared!

Thanks, Joe

I've actually decided to put it together in Google Docs. It's nice to be able to access it from anywhere.

I'd sell everything you can other then unreplaceable or special items. Especially when you have the time to do it.
The first move we made, we brought it all with us and regretted it ending up having to get rid of a large part in an unfamiliar place and it was a disaster.
Use Craigs list....a garage sale, tell all your friends or other cheap methods to move it out. Wait till the end to give whats left away so you can salvage as much cash as possible. Think about your timing before starting.
Who in their right mind wants to deal with large furniture having to load, haul, and unload again only to find out it does not fit etc.
You got the right idea so "get to it" and feel good about your decision.
Put the cash in a money market acct. or good Credit union and collect a little interest while you wait.

Cheers......Silverfox

P.S. Yes there is a Ikea in the Renton/Kent area just south of Seattle.

I second this! And I will also suggest Ikea...I won't go anywhere else for my furniture!

keep the antiques and special stuff, (package it and ship it)

sell / donate the rest - rebuy via Craigslist and rummage sales

I'd be tempted to sell the car and fly out !
(a rusty OH car is not too popular out here)

I buy cars at 'abandoned vehicle sales" (illegally parked and towed,...)
With steel prices higher, The minimum bid has gone to $100, so no more $35 cars,

Rusty cars aren't real popular here either.

Our cars are 2004 and 2006 models. Yet we are thinking of selling one before we move there anyway.
