The days in Seattle are going to be brief, gloomy, and chill this time of the year. Days will have 8-9 hours of (probably) overcast daylight.

For some this is okay. I'm looking at England next Christmas personally... We'd be going for British soccer mostly, but I'm also enjoying the idea of being there when it's NOT high season.

This week has been anything but gloomy, mostly clear skies.

Bring your wallet. The prices between Seattle and San Antonio will be... "noticable"...

To the point about driving, I've driven round trip Houston/Seattle/NorCal at least a dozen times during the summer months.

I've also driven round trip Houston/Taos about a half dozen times during winter break, late December to early January.

I've also driven round trip Seattle to Tahoe about a half dozen times, during both summer and winter.

I grew up in Texas so am not super comfortable driving in snow. Unless we are going on a ski vacation which necessitates snow driving, I would never plan a scenic cross-country drive in the winter. It's just too unpredictable and there are multiple passes to cross. Even the flat straight freeways become super treacherous in snowy conditions. I've seen I-40 near Amarillo littered with stranded and wrecked cars and tractor trailers a few times. Driving in that is white-knuckle and frustratingly slow, not at all scenic when you're solely focused on not crashing.

To the point about Seattle for Christmas, I love Seattle during the holidays! Yes it will likely be dark, cold and wet but the wet surfaces reflect all the holiday lights and the city just sparkles. It's quite lovely. Also makes ducking into a cozy restaurant or bar all the more pleasurable.

Have fun!
