In other words, not a population that tends to stay put. Seattle will reap what they sow. I just it doesn’t migrate north.

My ex mother-in-law constantly complains about the direction, which Seattle is heading, but voted for her.

At the beginning of the month, we were at Costco on 4th Ave and after shopping, she wanted her hotdog. No big deal till she started ******ing that they took away the regular Pepsi soda with sugar. Her comment was “Now they’re trying to control what we drink!!” I didn’t say anything since I was raised to respect my elders... Even if they do stupid *****, like voting for Sawant... While knowing what she is AND what she wants to do.

She has a nice area in her house that she rents out from time to time and just as a lesson to my ex-mother-in-law, a reality-check, I hope she rents it out to some deadbeat, who will get a 4-6 month “free stay,” at her cost. By doing so, all this pie in the sky ***** means nothing since it will be effecting her directly.

When I lived in Wisconsin you couldn’t evict a pregnant woman in winter.

Wow that is interesting. This was the whole state? I didn't figure WI being more progressive in any department compared to the West Coast.

There are many interesting things in the pipeline that will make the rental world much different in Seattle. Landlords, I suggest you get involved. Get organized and stay informed.

The funny thing to me is that Kshama Sawant has a PhD. in economics from NC State. Makes me wonder what they are teaching in econ 101 these days.

A policy like this just pushes up the supply curve, which means a higher equilibrium price for all. In other words, higher rents. If she really wanted to help people being evicted, the answer would be to provide temporary subsidies for those facing eviction. But of course that would require tax dollars, which the bureaucracy would not want to see diverted out of their pockets.

This is just econ 101--basic law of supply and demand.

WI was an early adopter of progressivism in the early 20th century. In particular, Sen. Robert ('fighting Bob') La Follett ran for president on a "Progressive Party" ticket in 1924. Madison, WI was a hotbed of left-wing radicalism in the 1960s.

I don’t know if it was the whole state. Luckily it didn’t happen to us.

I heard that they passed this "no winter evictions" movement. Property management companies and owners are already talking about bumping the required deposit so they don't have to eat 4 months worth of free rent. Great thinking lefties, get ready for $10,000 -$15,000 first/last/security deposits....

What she fails to realize is most landlords are not corporations. Landlords have mortgages as well to pay and when the rent doesn't arrive at the beginning of the month, they take it in shorts. So sorry I don't see the logic. There is no free lunch Kshama.

Seattle has a cap on deposit funds. This is from tenantsunion.org:

"In Seattle, landlords are required to charge no more than 1 month’s rent for security deposit and nonrefundable fees. Additionally, tenants are allowed up to a 6 month payment plan for the security deposit, any nonrefundable fees, and last month’s rent. More information about this law."

The one 'saving grace' is that the new law doesn't apply to smaller mom-and-pop operators with less than 4 doors. At least they're wise enough to not torpedo the underfunded LL's. (for now)

I predict a huge movement of apartments being converted to condo's - more strangulation to the already limited supply of affordable housing.
