Authorities say one person was killed and seven others were injured Wednesday in a shooting in downtown Seattle.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. near a McDonald's restaurant on 3rd Avenue and Pine Street. The scene is less than half a mile from an officer-involved shooting that happened just hours before, and officers rushed from that scene after receiving calls of a "mass casualty incident."

Police say one person is dead, while seven more were rushed to Harborview Medical Center. The fire department says the victims range in age from 9 to 55 years old. ...

I'm sitting here in Los Angeles, and Tim Conway (on the radio) starts reporting this shooting story in Seattle, talking to a reporter from KOMO radio. So it's made the news cycle in L.A.

I heard the gunshots loudly right outside my apartment window at the Belltown shooting earlier today at 3rd and Blanchard. Then I heard all the sirens on this one a couple blocks down. Been a rough day for 3rd avenue. Or rough couple of days counting the death yesterday at Westlake.

Seems like somewhat a coincidence, as this seems like a fairly safe area in general, or as far as big city downtowns go. It's life in the big city, there's gonna be some incidents. Just been a strange awakening having just moved here and it's right near me.

Really sad, this kind of thing doesn't happen with this regularity in any other developed country in the world. Check these statistics out, it will blow your mind: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org

We were sitting in a bus on a jammed road because of that first shooting when suddenly pretty close to our bus shots start going off (sounded kind of like fireworks) and everyone outside starts running. It was an “interesting” experience for sure.

True, the US is one of the most dangerous country in the civilized world. It's sad because nobody cares how to fix this.

A few hours ago, one of my best friends from Hawai'i texted me to make sure I wasn't there. So I guess it made it there, too. She has visited me a few times and we had dinner near that area when she was last here. She also knows my (former) commute had me waiting at that exact spot for a bus (and in the other shady spot near Westlake triangle later at night). Since I was tired of the drug deals going on, I often walked several blocks to another stop. I changed jobs, so my commute doesn't take me that way anymore (hasn't since September).

This is such a sad story. The 9-year-old in particular gets me. I wonder if some were visitors or...

Well, that area is known for drug dealing and other related criminal activities.

Sad that a 9 year old and other innocent adults were hit with criminal gunfire. Hopefully, Seattle police will capture the shooter... I just hope that the King County justice system or the lack of a justice system, will not release this person after a few days in the county jail or on some seriously low-ball bond amount.

Sad that this part of downtown has deteriorated to this level of lawlessness. I remember that back in the mid/late 70s, cops, in pairs, were always on foot patrols between Union and Pine on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th avenues.

This has nothing to do with this particular area, Seattle or King County. These things happen at random places at random times throughout the US EVERY DAY. This is a national problem.

You have never heard of Moms Demand Action? Everytown for Gun Safety? The Giffords Center? There are plenty of people who care. The majority of Americans support better gun safety measures and that includes the majority of gun owners. Elect politicians who reflect the will of the people. Local gun safety laws will have little effect when the next city or state over does not have the same laws. We need federal action.

As much as I agree with you, it seems almost impossible on a federal level.
